On Pit Row

On Pit Row: Web design and development project by Luke Development.

Project Details

  • Launched: January, 2008
  • HTML, CSS, PHP, Graphics
  • Three websites: Main site, and two blogs.

The guys from On Pit Row had a need. Their old site was quite outdated, and they also had two additional sites scattered across the internet. I pitched the philosophy of having all three sites under the same roof, and it is proving to be the right move. Starting with their main website, it provides a brief glimpse of the show, its cast and its history. It centralizes all of their content from across all three sites, and provides a one-stop location for all of their listeners and readers. Folks can also subscribe to their RSS feed, which provides content from all three sites with the convenience of a single link.

When it comes to web sites, their design, and the development of them, one thing you learn very quickly is that they are never truly complete. Whether it's a tweak here or there, a new feature, or whatever the case may be, there is always something going on. On Pit Row is no exception, and these guys have some great ideas to implement in the coming months. Specifically, I can't say what these are, but they are going to be a great addition to an already great website.

World Kayak Blogs

World Kayak Blogs: Web design and development project by Luke Development.

Project Details

  • Started: November, 2007
  • HTML, CSS, PHP, Graphics
  • Continuation of existing website.

The director of World Kayak, James, sent word this way that he needed a developer for on-going improvements to his blogspot. Hailing from Canada, and being an avid adventure seeker, we've hit it off pretty well thus far. While his site was good initially, I've taken it to the next level with several interesting and unique features that brings all of the blogs together in a more community friendly environment.

Specifically, there are several features I'm pleased with. I've added in a private tagging solution that automatically tags content, but also allows for user input through their category and tagging functions. It provides more weight to user input, but if for some reason a user does not categorize or tag their content, the system is still able to gain relevant tags from the content.

Another feature I'm pleased with is the ability for the above system to extract images from the content, and provide that data to a function which then displays recently posted photos. All seamless to the end user, without the hassle of needing to provide additional input.

Finally, I'll touch on the Regional Content. Users are able to specify their home region upon sign-up (or change it in their profile), as well as categorize individual posts as specific regions. This all allows for content to be regionalized, and make for a pleasant browsing experience overall. Regions can be rotated around the globe, then selected. Selecting an individual region not only provides content from that region, but a list of bloggers in that region as well. All making it easy to find content and people in your neck of the woods.

This is an on-going project, with lots of great improvements already planned for 2008. Including, but not limited to, additional video features, event listing, event management, event results, and a whole lot more.

The Smith-Mills Group

The Smith-Mills Group: Web design and development project by Luke Development.

Project Details

  • Started: March, 2007
  • Launched: May, 2007

Mr. Smith gave me their company logo, and said, "Build a site that wraps around this logo." Well, that's what I did. The layout is clean, efficient, and they absolutely loved the results. They are a small business, with the experience and connections to help other small businesses compete for Federal and State Goverment contracts, as well as getting their products and/or services listed on the GSA Schedule.

As their site launched, Mr. Smith sent the following kind words:

"Luke, working with you was a real treat. Your attention to detail, understanding, and the way you listened to our needs was a breath of fresh air."

On Pit Row

On Pit Row: Web design and development project by Luke Development.

After getting to know the guys from On Pit Row over 6 months or so, they decided to go for a complete redesign of their old site. Their new site brings together 3 previously existing sites (their main site and two blogs). Content is aggregated on their main site, which enables users to find information which interests them as quickly and efficiently as possible. On Pit Row is a syndicated NASCAR radio show, which airs Tuesday evenings on select stations across the Fox Sports Radio Network.

Currently Amusing Awesome

Have you seen Arnel Pineda? Wow. This guy blows me away. Granted, if you're not a Journey fan, it'll probably be out of your grasp. Needless to say, my faith in one of the icons of the 70's/80's is (finally) restored.
